AWS Partners with Shayp to Replenish Over 370 Million Litres of Water to Frankfurt

We are excited to share a significant milestone for Shayp and for water stewardship in Europe: Amazon Web Services (AWS) has chosen to partner with us to tackle water loss in Frankfurt's buildings, as part of a broader initiative that will return more than 370 million litres of water to the region every year.

This project is one of two water replenishment initiatives AWS has announced in Germany today, combining smart building technology with nature-based solutions. For Shayp, it is both a validation of what we do and a wonderful opportunity to bring verified water savings to hundreds of buildings in one of Europe's most important cities.

Smart Technology, Real Savings

At the heart of the Frankfurt initiative is a challenge that is all too familiar to us: water leaks in buildings that go undetected for weeks, months, or even years. Our data shows that 1 in 3 buildings is leaking at any given time, and non-residential buildings such as schools, hospitals, and public institutions are among the worst affected.

AWS is funding the installation of our IoT-enabled water monitoring technology in 500 Frankfurt buildings by 2028, at no cost to building owners or operators. Each Shayp sensor captures water flow data continuously, using AWS cloud infrastructure to power real-time analysis and immediate anomaly alerts. When a leak is detected, building managers are notified straight away so they can act before small issues become serious waste.

Once fully deployed, the programme is expected to reduce water waste in those 500 buildings by more than 320 million litres per year. That is not a projection based on assumptions; our monitoring approach produces verified, auditable savings that partners like AWS can rely on for their sustainability reporting.

Installations begin this year and will run through to 2028.

What This Means for Us

Grégoire de Hemptinne, CEO of Shayp, shared his thoughts on the announcement:

"We are proud to be working with Amazon on this landmark project in Frankfurt. Our AWS-powered technology will help the city reduce water waste by more than 320 million litres. It shows how innovation can rise to meet pressing environmental challenges."

Being selected for this programme is particularly meaningful to us. Shayp was chosen for the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator in 2025 from a field of over 550 applicants, and this Frankfurt project is a direct expression of what that collaboration can achieve. Together with our AWS-based infrastructure, we are already working with Amazon at additional European locations.

Part of a Bigger Picture

The Frankfurt building programme sits alongside a wetland restoration project in the Spessart Forest, led by EcoTree, which is expected to contribute a further 57 million litres of water replenishment annually. Together, both initiatives will return more than 370 million litres of water to the Frankfurt region each year.

These projects are part of Amazon's global commitment to become water positive by 2030, meaning they return more water to communities than their operations consume. Across more than 50 water projects worldwide, Amazon expects to replenish over 21 billion litres annually.

A Growing Community of Action

This announcement follows our partnerships with Microsoft and Google, and reinforces something we genuinely believe: that corporate water stewardship, done well, is a collective effort. No single company or technology can solve water scarcity on its own. But when facility managers, building operators, sustainability teams, and forward-thinking organisations like AWS work together, the impact is measurable and lasting.

Thanks to the trust of our partners and the hard work of everyone involved, Shayp has now helped save over 30 billion litres of water globally, typically reducing building water consumption by up to 20%. Frankfurt is the next chapter in that story, and we could not be more excited to write it.
